Coach’s Coach vs Player’s Coach

“Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate.” – Vince Lombardi

There are two types of coaches: the player’s coach and the coach’s coach.  Bill Belichick is considered one of the NFL’s greatest leaders.  He is a coach’s coach.  Making sure his coordinators buy into his philosophy and spread that message down to the players has helped him win 3 Super Bowl rings.  Phil Jackson is the NBA’s greatest coach.  He got there by managing his players and their egos.  Both philosophies work as long as those on the front lines are marching to the same beat as those calling the shots.  The more hierarchy your company has and the needs of your audience will dictate what type of leader you need to be.
