Imitation, Interpretation, Origination

Quincy Jones once recalled how he learned to play and write music.  His mentor tought him to use these 3 steps: Imitation, Interpretation and Origination. 

Here is my take for idea generation:

The beginner imitates ideas that others have previously done successfully.

The competent can interpret the reasons behind why others have succeeded.

The expert is free to originate new ideas from the lessons learned during  imitation and interpretation.
